Bookkeeping

What is the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?

A practical answer from the Affordable Bookkeeper knowledge centre.

Bookkeeping usually focuses on recording and reconciling everyday transactions. Accounting can include financial statements, analysis and broader business reporting. Tax and BAS services have registration requirements separate from those job titles.

What this means in practice

The services overlap, so the most useful question is who will do each task for your business. A bookkeeper may prepare the records your accountant uses at year end, while a registered BAS agent can provide services within their authorised scope. Agree responsibility for payroll, BAS, tax returns and financial reports to avoid gaps or duplicated fees.

Your next steps

  • List the tasks you need
  • Check relevant registrations
  • Agree who handles each obligation
